This article appeared in aFinancial Adviser’ in April 2002, discussing Dr. Altmann’s proposals for reform of annuities – to try to ensure that those with moderate or smaller capital sums still are able to obtain good value from their annuity.
The move away from final salary schemes does not have to be a disaster at all. Dr. Altmann believes the demise of DB was always inevitable for private companies and final salary schemes are not always as good as they are currently thought to be.
These are two slides which demonstrate examples of the regressive effect of tax relief on pensions and possible contribution to inequality of wealth among the elderly.
